Brick NJ Dentist Relieves Pain with Root Canal Procedure

When someone says the words “root canal” do you immediately think of pain? The purpose of a root canal isn’t to bring you pain but to save a tooth that is infected. Overall, these treatments are actually relatively painless and don’t tend to require more than a trip or two to your Brick NJ dentist.

When Should I Have a Root Canal?

Root canals are only recommended when there is an infection present deep inside the tooth. The pulp becomes infected as a result of bacteria that started from a cavity or dental injury. Without treatment, you could end up losing the tooth completely.

How is a Root Canal Performed?

Generally, a root canal is going to consist of a four-step process.

1. The dentist is going to start by numbing the area with local anesthesia. You might feel a slight pinch from the needle, but it shouldn’t cause pain. Then, the dentist may then apply a dental dam to isolate the tooth and to keep it clean during the root canal.

2. Using small tools, the dentist will access the inside of your tooth by making a small opening at the top. Tiny files are then used to clear away the pulp which is diseased. The dentist might also use some water to wash away some of the pulp. It is common for an antimicrobial solution to be applied inside the tooth to prevent any more infection.

3. The dentist will then fill the chamber that was created. On top of that, they will apply a temporary filling.

4. Once the root canal has healed, your dentist can apply a permanent crown to the top of your tooth.

After a Root Canal

Once you’ve had a root canal, it is imperative that you take proper care of your teeth. Your dentist will likely want to perform another x-ray to ensure that any sign of infection is gone. Continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. You’ll also want to floss once daily. If you find that there is any trouble in the area of your root canal, you’ll want to contact your Brick, NJ dentist right away.
